Tennessee Baseball Fall Scrimmage Notes And Stats: Oct. 17

Tennessee baseball was back at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Thursday evening for a short four inning intrasquad scrimmage as fall ball keeps churning along.

It’s important to note that this was not a super formal scrimmage. Pitchers are on pitch counts and each pitcher has designated innings to throw. So there were two half inning that ended before three outs were recorded because the pitcher had either hit his pitch count or was close to so they called the inning so he could pitch a little bit more the next inning.

That was the case for Luke Payne who technically pitched two innings but recorded only three outs. The second-year lefty struggled on Thursday, walking four batters and hitting another. The positive was that he struck out all three batters he retired.

Let’s stick with the pitchers. It was my first chance to watch Kennesaw State transfer Tanner Franklin and I was impressed. He worked a crisp 1-2-3 first inning before allowing a pair of singles that created a run in his second inning pitch.

The number don’t look good for Nate Snead in his two innings pitched but his defense did him little favors. Chris Newstrom tried to make a diving play in the outfield and failed and another single was misplayed by the outfielder leading to more bases. The tall right-handed bounced back with a clean second inning.

I also thought Dylan Loy had a good day but his numbers don’t look nearly as good as Cannon Peebles took him deep into the left field porches for a two-run homer. It was Peebles second home run in as many days.

Another batter who had built off a strong performance Wednesday with a strong performance on Thursday was Levi Clark. The freshman had an RBI single and roped a line drive right at the left fielder in his other at-bat.

It wasn’t a particularly crisp day for the defense. Not a ton of errors or anything but some plays that could have been made weren’t and there were a number of stolen bases.

Lastly, Dalton Bargo, Gavin Kilen and Ariel Antigua all didn’t participate in the scrimmage for the second straight day. With that, it’s on to the stats.
