Tennessee football was staring down another gut wrenching loss against Florida when the Gators tied the game with a 27-yard touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the game.
But in overtime the Vols found a way. A false start and Bryson Eason blowing up a screen pushed Florida back into third-and-20 on the first possession of overtime. Florida kicker Trey Smack missed wide right from 47 yards and Tennessee could win with any points.
On a night where they struggled badly, Tennessee’s offense didn’t leave it up to Max Gilbert to win. The Vols hit short passes to Holden Staes and Dont’e Thornton. The completion to Thornton set the Vols up with first-and-goal at the three-yard line. After a two-yard Dylan Sampson run, Tennessee brought out the big boys.
Going with its jumbo package, Tennessee punched it in on second-and-goal at the one-yard line. It was Dylan Sampson’s second touchdown run of the game and it gave the Vols’ 143 rushing yards on the night.
