The AP NFL Regular Season MVP has become almost exclusively an award given to the league’s top quarterback as QBs have garnered 11 straight MVPs and 16 of the last 17.

And right on cue, the top 16 current MVP favorites are quarterbacks, according to the consensus odds at the leading online sportsbooks.

Following is a closer look at the top five favorites to win the 2024 award entering Week 6:

NFL MVP odds: Patrick Mahomes (best odds: +330 DraftKings)

It certainly isn’t about the statistics with the Kansas City Chiefs’ QB.

Mahomes, in fact, currently ranks outside of the league’s top seven in yards (1,235), touchdown passes (6) and completion percentage (69.4), passer rating (88.9) and QBR (55.8) while tying for the league lead with six interceptions.

Rather, it’s another number — K.C.’s 5-0 record as one of two unbeaten teams — that’s making the biggest impression.

The two-time defending Super Bowl-champion Chiefs just keep winning despite a rash of key offensive injuries that have KO’d running back Isiah Pacheco and wide receivers Rashee Rice and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

A stellar defense has played a key role in Kansas City’s current 11-game win streak, but the lion’s share of the credit — along with a significant number of MVP votes — are going to be heaped upon Mahomes.

NFL MVP odds: Lamar Jackson (+650 bet365)

The Baltimore Ravens’ QB is making a strong case for back-to-back MVP awards as he currently ranks among the top five in TD passes (9), passer rating (107.2) and QBR (67.1) while pacing all quarterbacks with 363 rushing yards.

Unlike Mahomes’ undefeated Chiefs, the Ravens are 3-2 and his postseason record is only 2-4 without a trip to the Super Bowl.

But the MVP is a regular season award, and Jackson continues to impress mightily on that stage.

NFL MVP odds: Josh Allen (+900 FanDuel)

The Buffalo Bills QB is much like Jackson, possessing a resume stacked with dual-threat statistical accomplishments and seemingly weekly “wow” plays.

Allen’s surrounding talent in Buffalo has taken a hit, but he’s tops in the league with a 77.6 QBR and has yet to throw an interception — a negative that has helped prevent him from previously winning an MVP.

The Bills have dropped two straight following a 3-0 start, but they’re still on track to win a fifth-straight AFC East title and that figures to keep Allen in the thick of the MVP hunt once again.

NFL MVP odds: C.J. Stroud (+800 Caesars)

Last season’s Offensive Rookie of the Year finished eighth in the 2023 MVP voting, and now the Houston Texans’ second-year standout is aiming even higher.

Stroud ranks third with 1,385 passing yards and has the 4-1 Texans atop the AFC South once again.

But even at Stroud’s steady and impressive pace, will it be enough to outshine the flashier, big-name QBs ahead of him?

Houston just outdueled Allen’s Bills 23-20 last Sunday, but the back-to-back December games against the Chiefs and Ravens in Weeks 16 and 17 could loom very large in the 2024 NFL MVP race.

NFL MVP odds: Jayden Daniels (+1100 FanDuel)

Only one rookie (Jim Brown in 1957) has won the AP NFL MVP award, but the Washington Commanders’ precocious rookie QB is making quite the instant impression.

Daniels leads the league with a 77.1 percent completion rate and ranks among the top five in passer rating (106.2) and QBR (73.2) while trailing only Jackson among QBs with 300 rushing yards.

Like Stroud’s Texans a season ago, Daniels has the 4-1 Commanders on a worst-to-first  track. But can that and Daniels’ stellar stats possibly lift him up alongside Brown in the very exclusive NFL Rookie MVP Club?
