Even as the road team in this early-season clash of 3-0 SEC powers, Tennessee was a 6.5-point favorite with -122 juice at FanDuel as of Tuesday afternoon.

On the moneyline, the Vols were -255 and the Sooners +205 while FanDuel’s game total was 57.5 points.

The game’s intrigue extends far beyond the current rankings as it marks Oklahoma’s SEC debut and the return of UT head coach Josh Heupel, a former OU standout QB, to Norman.

It will be the first head-to-head meeting since the back-to-back games in 2015 (a 31-24 double-overtime OU win in Knoxville) and 2014 (a 34-10 Sooners victory in Norman).

Behind redshirt-freshman QB Nico Iamaleava and tailback Dylan Sampson, the Vols lead the nation in scoring at 63.7 points per game and rank second in total offense (639.3 total yards).

UT has won each of its three contests by 41 points or more — including a 51-10 rout of then-No. 24 NC State in Charlotte on Sept. 3. The Volunteers’ plus-178 point differential is the best by any FBS team through three games since 2013 (Baylor).

And since the start of the 2022 season, Tennessee is 23-6 straight up and 20-9 against the spread (.690) — trailing only Penn State (.704) in FBS ATS winning percentage.

OU, meanwhile, is led by sophomore QB Jackson Arnold, who has thrown for 484 yards and seven TDs and also is pacing the team in rushing with 159 yards and two scores on 36 carries.

Otherwise, it’s been a down offensive start for the Sooners as they rank 14th in the 16-team SEC with an average of 325.3 total yards per outing.

Defensively, Oklahoma is allowing only 77.7 rushing yards per game while ranking 10th nationally with 11 sacks and first in the SEC with 10 forced turnovers.

The Sooners have logged wins over Temple (51-13), Houston (16-12) and Tulane (34-19) to date, covering double-digit spreads in all but the Sept. 7 win over the Cougars.

Since 2022, OU is 19-10 SU and 15-14 ATS. Over the last 10 seasons, the Sooners are 6-5-1 ATS as an underdog.
