Tennessee continues to knock down program records here in 2024.

According to UT Sports, the Vols’ 37 first-quarter points is a new program record for most points in a single quarter (modern era), topping the previous mark set by the 2000 Tennessee team with 35 against Arkansas.

Tennessee scored five offensive touchdowns in the first 15 minutes while the Vols’ defense also recorded a safety to add two points to Tennessee’s total. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel even pulled out a surprising onside kick in the first quarter to skip over a Kent State possession in favor of another run for the Vols.

Vols running back Dylan Sampson recorded three first-quarter touchdowns while DeSean Bishop added in one of his own. Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava also connected with WR Chris Brazzell for a 53-yard touchdown in the quarter.

This is the second program record that Tennessee’s offense has broken in the first three games of the season. During the Vols’ season opener against Chattanooga, quarterback Nico Iamaleava broke Tennessee’s all-time passing yards record for yards in a single half of football. Iamaleava’s 314 passing yards in the first half was one yard more than Tyler Bray’s 313 single-half passing yards in 2012.

No. 7 Tennessee led Kent State 37-0 after the first quarter and currently leads 58-0 with 2 minutes remaining in the first half. Tennessee’s 58-point first-half is also a program record in the modern era.

  1. We can hardly hear the guys calling the game. The crowd, band and other music is much louder. They need to turn their mic’s up.
