Tennessee kicker Max Gilbert spoke to the media on Tuesday morning in Knoxville after knocking through 18 of his 19 kicks through the first two games.
Gilbert is a perfect 13-of-13 with PAT kicks and has hit five of his six field goal attempts.
During his collegiate debut against Chattanooga, Gilbert was flawless with 13 points as he hit field goals from 36 and 42 yards out, as well as 7-for-7 on points after the touchdown.
While speaking to the media on Tuesday, Gilbert said he was hoping to get up some attempts against the Mocs in the opener, knowing that it would help prepare him for Week 2’s top 25 matchup against NC State in Charlotte.
Gilbert went 3-for-4 against the Wolfpack in Bank of America Stadium with a 32-yarder and 45-yarder in the second quarter, the latter as time expired in the half, as well as a 36-yarder in the third quarter. Gilbert’s lone miss of the game was a massive attempt from 53 yards out with less than four minutes remaining in the 51-10 game.
There are a lot of encouraging takeaways from the first two weeks of Tennessee’s season, and having a kicker with a huge leg like Gilbert’s is certainly around the top of the list.
The redshirt freshman kicker from Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis will line back up for the Vols this weekend against Kent State at 7:45 p.m. ET in Neyland Stadium.
