No. 14 Tennessee and No. 24 NC State will clash in a battle of unbeaten ranked teams this Saturday night in the Duke’s Mayo Classic from Charlotte, N.C.

Tennessee will take their high-powered offense into Bank of America Stadium behind star quarterback Nico Iamaleava as he prepares to make his third career start. Iamaleava is surrounded by a crop of new and returning weapons, as Bru McCoy, Chris Brazzell, and Dylan Sampson look to make their impact on the scoreboard as well.

Looking to keep up with Tennessee’s offense is a capable group in their own right, though, as veteran quarterback Grayson McCall and WR Kevin Concepcion look to get things back on track after a deceiving 17-point win over Western Carolina in Week 1.

Rocky Top Insider will have you locked in with live, on-site coverage from Charlotte on Saturday night.

Previous Matchups

Tennessee and NC State have only met on the field three times in program history, but it’s hard not to quickly remember the last contest despite it taking place a dozen years ago. Battling in the 2012 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, NC State donned all-red uniforms – red helmet, red pants, red jersey. Tennessee, meanwhile, wore their traditional home orange-and-white uniform. It’s easy to imagine that some people hated the color-on-color uniform matchup, but it was a terrific mess at the same time. It’s too bad that won’t be the case this time around. Tennessee will wear all-white while NC State will wear white-on-red-on-white uniforms this Saturday.

Tennessee defeated NC State 35-21 in that contest.

On an interesting historical note, Tennessee’s second all-time meeting against NC State came exactly four weeks after the start of World War II, when Germany invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939. The Vols fell to the Wolfpack in their first all-time meeting, 16-0, in October 1911.
