Tennessee EDGE rusher Emmanuel Okoye will miss the remainder of the season with an injury, a U.T. representative confirmed to Rocky Top Insider on Monday afternoon. On3’s VolQuest first had the news.
Okoye sustained the season-ending injury during camp, according to a Tennessee spokesperson.
Okoye, a native of Lagos, Nigeria, originally committed to Tennessee in May 2023 from the NFL Academy in London, England. Okoye reclassified from the 2024 class to the 2023 class to get a jump start on his collegiate career, beginning summer courses in the summer of 2023.
Okoye’s injury comes on the heels of a position switch, too, as the former international recruit was just starting to find his footing with the Volunteers on the defensive line. While Okoye did not play in Tennessee’s season opener against Chattanooga, Okoye had been working at the LEO position during the spring and the fall after being a tight end during his freshman campaign.
Tennessee still has a stacked room of EDGE rushers, so while the injury doesn’t hurt Tennessee’s current on-field production, it’s still a tough break for an impressive student-athlete that you never want to see.
There wasn’t much talk about Okoye this spring as the redshirt freshman underwent his position change, but that doesn’t mean that folks haven’t raved about the Vols’ talented underclassman before. When he was a true freshman in the tight ends room last season, assistant coach Alec Abeln didn’t hold back his praise on the raw prospect.
“He’s got the chance to be the most athletic guy to ever play the position,” Abeln said in Aug. 2023. “I truly believe that … He is as physically gifted as anyone I’ve ever been around. He’s got to continue to make steps every day but just from a raw athletic standpoint the ceiling is unlimited.”

If it’s true for the tight ends room, it’s likely true for the LEO room, too – or at least something in the same ballpark. Okoye just needs to translate that offensive athleticism to defensive athleticism, now after he recovers from injury.
Fortunately for Okoye, though, Tennessee has done a great job of rehabbing injuries in the last few years, creating even stronger players when they return to the field. A few names from the current roster come to mind including Bru McCoy, Dont’e Thornton, Keenan Pili, and Arion Carter, all four of whom started for Tennessee in the season opener after suffering season-ending injuries in 2023.
“Yeah, Keenan Pili, too. We have a few guys,” Josh Heupel said after the game on Saturday about Thornton and McCoy returning from injury. “Unfortunately, in this game, the contact is real. And through their work, their effort, right? That’s during the rehab process and our weight room. Guys building them back up on our medical team, all those guys are in a great space and playing really good football. So today was a big day for those guys.”
As previously mentioned, Okoye didn’t look to be in the 2024 LEO rotation because of the strong depth that Tennessee already boasts at that spot and the new work that Okoye has been doing to learn the position. Tennessee looks content with star EDGE rusher James Pearce Jr., junior Joshua Josephs, and sophomore Caleb Herring at the position moving forward, with five-star true freshman Jordan Ross waiting in the back as well. Okoye’s injury hurts Tennessee because of the delay in development aspect, but the production on the field shouldn’t change.
As awful as a season-ending injury is, though, there can be positives found in the situation. Tennessee wide receiver Dont’e Thornton used his time sidelined to rework his mental approach, which turned into a two-touchdown game in his first contest back on Saturday. Pili, on the other hand, used the 2023 season to soak in as much knowledge about the Vols’ defensive scheme as he could.
Okoye’s on-field development may be coming to a halt with the recent news, but his off-field knowledge and mental makeup can still evolve throughout the course of the season.
