The Colorado Rockies called up former Tennessee pitcher Seth Halvorsen up to its big league roster ahead of the September call ups, Rockies Insider Patrick Lyons first reported on Friday afternoon.
Colorado drafted Halvorsen in the seventh round of the 2023 MLB Draft and the right-handed pitcher has quickly moved up the Rockies’ farm system with an impressive year-plus in professional baseball.
Halvorsen has spent 33 games in Double-A and eight games in Triple-A this season, combining to strike out 56 batters and post a 4.47 ERA in 44.1 innings pitched. The tall right-hander has actually been more effective in his eight appearances in Triple-A, posting a 3.00 ERA in nine innings pitched.
The Plymouth, Minnesota native pitched just one season at Tennessee after transferring from Missouri following his freshman season. An injury kept Halvorsen from pitching during the 2022 season but the right-handed pitcher became one of the top arms in Tennessee’s bullpen during the 2023 season.

As part of a loaded Volunteer pitching staff, Halvorsen posted a 3-3 record and 3.81 ERA in 52 innings pitched. He was a key part of Tennessee’s run to the College World Series. His 3.1 no-hit innings in the Vols’ wild 13 inning victory over Clemson was crucial in Tennessee advancing to the super regionals.
Halvorsen is the sixth Tennessee baseball player under Tony Vitello to make it to The Show joining Garrett Crochet, Andre Lipcius, Ben Joyce, Trey Lipscomb and Jordan Beck. Four of those Vols were members of Tennessee’s 2022 SEC Championship team.
Halvorsen is one of two Vols on the Rockies along with Beck. Former Tennessee pitcher Chase Dollander is also impressing for Colorado in the minor leagues this season.
