Former Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer announced that he was medically retiring from football on Monday night ahead of his final season of eligibility at Stephen F. Austin.
“I’ve had some time to sit and think about my past and my future with football,” Maurer wrote in an Instagram post. “I can finally say I’m at peace with the outcome of my career. Multiple knee surgeons, and a pending a complete UCL Reconstruction surgery is forcing to call quits to football for good.”
Maurer was a high three-star recruit who signed with Jeremy Pruitt and Tennessee out of the 2019 signing class. The right-handed starter played sparingly in 2019 completing 35-of-75 passes for 541 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions while adding 56 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
The right-handed quarterback played in just one game in 2020 and left the Tennessee football team during fall practice in 2021 before eventually transferring to FCS Stephen F. Austin following the season.

Maurer was the Lumberjacks’ backup quarterback in 2022 before becoming the starter for the 2023 season. A year ago, Maurer completed 195-of-346 yards for 2,066 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions while rushing for 228 yards and three touchdowns.
With Maurer starting at quarterback, Stephen F. Austin went just 3-8 a season ago including an 0-6 conference record.
Despite a long college career, Maurer did still have one-year of eligibility remaining. The 2020 COVID-19 year didn’t count against him and he redshirted the 2021 season. That means Maurer played just three seasons (2019, ’22 and ’23) and still had one year to play.
“To the great game of football, thank you,” Maurer said. “You’ve granted me the opportunity to be the first in my family to graduate from college, you’ve granted me the opportunity to meet and build connections with amazing people that will last a lifetime. And you’ve completely changed my life for the better.”
