Former Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs is doing Josh Dobbs things with a brand new team.

After signing with the 49ers during the offseason, Dobbs has been the Niners’ top preseason quarterback through the first two weeks. Dobbs was the backup quarterback for the Niners’ preseason opener against Tennessee last week, playing the whole second half while recording 146 yards and one interception on 14-of-20 passing. Dobbs also found the endzone with a rushing touchdown during the game.

San Francisco started Brock Purdy at quarterback for the first time in the preseason on Sunday but put Dobbs into the game after just three series. Dobbs entered the game on Sunday down seven points to the New Orleans Saints but orchestrated a scoring drive his first time out. Dobbs led the Niners’ offense 41 yards down the field to set up a field goal in the second quarter.

The Saints fumbled their next offensive possession, leading to another scoring drive from Dobbs and the offense. The former Vol took the Niners 32 yards down the field to set up another field goal and close the gap to one.

San Francisco forced a quick Saints punt with less than two minutes until halftime, giving Dobbs one more shot to put points on the board. Dobbs conducted an 11-play, 1:16 drive with 1:17 on the clock to go 80 yards down the field and give San Francisco the lead heading into halftime. The former Volunteer punched the ball into the endzone with a one-yard rushing touchdown with just a second left on the clock.

Dobbs played the entire second quarter and finished the game with three straight scoring drives and a touchdown before halftime. Dobbs’ touchdown was also critical in the game as it would be the last touchdown scored between both teams in the 16-10 San Francisco victory.

Dobbs finished his second preseason game with 133 passing yards on 12-of-21 passing, 25 rushing yards on three carries, and one rushing touchdown.

Through two preseason games stretching three quarters, Dobbs has 279 passing yards on 26-of-41 passing, 31 yards on four carries, one interception, and two rushing touchdowns.
