VFL Inky Johnson returned to Rocky Top for a quick visit on Monday as he spoke to the Vols’ program and took in the sights and sounds of his old home.

While there’s been no video released on Johnson’s message to the team, Tennessee Director of Football Operations Andrew Goodman shared one of the many standout themes on social media.

“Could’ve listed a dozen takeaways from Inky Johnson tonight.. but here’s one simple, yet poignant theme: ‘Don’t complain… Contribute.”

This is the second time that Johnson has visited the Tennessee program this year with a trip to Knoxville back in February.

“Value and appreciate the game,” Johnson shared with the team in February. “Because as much as you think it is promised to you, and you’re going to have it forever, it ain’t promised to none of us. Right? Because we live with an arrogant spirit and we feel as if we are promised something. And so every game, or every practice, we might not approach it like – man, do it as if it’s going to be your last time doing it.”

During his trip back to Tennessee on Monday, Johnson also visited the Tennessee locker room, taking in a moment to see his mural between the lockers.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel shared a picture with the former Vol great.

Johnson, a former Tennessee cornerback in the mid-2000s, was a two-time captain and was projected as a first-round draft pick for the 2007 NFL Draft. Johnson’s path would change before the draft, though. During Tennessee’s 31-30 win over Air Force in the second game of the 2006 season, Johnson suffered a life-threatening injury that would paralyze his right arm.

Since his injury, Johnson has embarked on a new trail as a motivational speaker for companies, organizations, and teams alike. According to Johnson’s official website, the former Volunteer has had “a burning desire to use his situation and experiences to add value to people’s lives.”

Johnson’s ability to impact people’s lives using his words and his story has been transcendent for those who listen. Johnson’s client list includes Chick-fil-A, Dell Technologies, AT&T, Coca-Cola, Bank of America, and more. The former Volunteer also has worked with the universities of Alabama, Texas, Oregon, and Clemson, along with the New York Knicks, Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, New England Patriots, and countless more teams and programs along the way.

Tennessee kicks off its 2024 season on Aug. 31 in Neyland Stadium against Chattanooga.
