The Kansas City Royals selected Tennessee right-handed pitcher Drew Beam with the second pick in the third round (No. 76 overall) of the 2024 MLB Draft on Monday afternoon.
In the Kansas City farm system, Beam joins his former Tennessee teammate Jared Dickey who landed with the Royals last offseason.
Beam was a beacon of production in his three seasons at Tennessee, making 51 starts in 52 appearances as a weekend starter in the entirety of his collegiate career. A right-handed pitcher, Beam was the Vols’ Sunday starter in his freshman and sophomore seasons before moving to the Saturday starter role in his junior season.
In his junior season, Beam posted a 9-2 record, 4.22 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP in a career best 102.1 innings pitched. Over the course of his three-year career, Beam posted an 26-8 record and 3.60 ERA while striking out 249 batters in 262.2 innings pitched.

Beam played a major role in perhaps the best three-year stretch in Tennessee history. The right-handed pitcher was one of the top arms on two teams that won the SEC Regular Season Championship, two teams that won the SEC Tournament, two teams that made the College World Series and Tennessee’s first ever National Championship team.
The 6-foot-4, 207-pound pitcher was brilliant in NCAA Tournament starts against Charlotte and Southern Miss in his sophomore season. And after poor starts in the regional and super regional in 2024, Beam finished his career with two really strong starts in the College World Series.
Beam is the fifth Tennessee baseball player off the board in the 2024 MLB Draft joining second baseman Christian Moore, first baseman Blake Burke, third baseman Billy Amick and left-handed pitcher Dylan Dreiling.
