The Minnesota Twins selected Tennessee third baseman Billy Amick with the 21st pick in the second round and the No. 60 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Amick spent just one season at Tennessee after transferring from Clemson following his sophomore season. Despite missing two weeks in the middle of SEC play with an appendicitis, Amick hit .306 with 23 home runs, 38 extra-base hits and 65 RBIs in his lone season in Knoxville.
The 23 home runs were tied with Dylan Dreiling for second on Tennessee’s roster behind Christian Moore (33). Before the 2024 season, Sonny Cortez’ 24 home runs in 1998 was previously the Vols’ single-season home run record.
Amick didn’t have many unforgettable moments from his lone season at Knoxville but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have any clutch performances. The Vols’ starting third baseman hit a home run in the SEC Championship game against LSU and then his two home runs in the Knoxville Regional.
Then in the College World Series, Amick’s ninth inning single against Florida State kept the inning alive and brought Dylan Dreiling to the plate as the left fielder hit a walk off home run. In the seventh inning of game three of the College World Series finals, Amick’s two-out single sparked Tennessee’s two-out rally which led to the three runs that helped them hold off the Aggies late push.
The junior third baseman is the second Tennessee baseball player off the board in the 2024 MLB Draft joining second baseman Christian Moore and first baseman Blake Burke.
