2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest odds: With Joey Chestnut banned, who is the new favorite?

The Fourth of July brings us fireworks, parades, backyard gatherings … and the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

This year’s event from Coney Island, N.Y., is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. ET Thursday with the women’s competition (airing on ESPN3), followed by the men’s contest at noon (ESPN2).

The men’s contest is expected to be nearly anyone’s game now that perennial champion Joey Chestnut has been banned from the Nathan’s Fourth-of-July event.

Joey Chestnut, the 16-time Nathan’s champion and event record holder, is not competing this year due to as sponsorship disagreement.

That means for the first time since 2015, when Matt Stonie edged Chestnut 62-60 in hot dogs consumed, we’ll have a new men’s champ.

The favorite to assume the throne is 49-year-old Oxford, Mass., resident Geoffrey Esper, who finished second to Chestnut last July 4, inhaling 49 franks to the champ’s 62.

Of the odds posted as of Wednesday afternoon at the leading online sportsbooks, Esper was listed with +100 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook to -120 (BetMGM sportsbook) odds as the favorite.

James Webb, a 35-year-old Australian, was second on oddsboards at +125 to +200 odds at BetMGM, with Tampa’s Nick Wehry third with odds ranging from +550 (DK, BetMGM) to +1600 (FanDuel).

At FanDuel, you also can bet on Esper’s total number of hot dogs eaten. As of Tuesday, that total was set at 49.5 with -112 odds on both the over and under.

While the perennial Nathan’s men’s favorite is absent this July 4, the reigning women’s champ is attempting to add to her impressive resume.

Tampa’s Miki Sudo, 38, has captured nine of the last 10 Nathan’s women’s crowns. Her only absence from the top spot came in 2021 when she was on maternity leave.

Reflecting her dominance, Sudo is a heavy favorite this Thursday with consensus odds of -1265 as of Tuesday. Her best value could be found at FanDuel (-1000).

Japan’s Mayoi Ebihara had the second-best odds but was way back at a consensus +665

Michelle Lesco, the 2021 champ during Sudo’s absence, is third with odds ranging from +2000 (DK) to +3000 (FanDuel).

Sudo scarfed down 39.5 hot dogs to win in 2023 and set a women’s record with 48.5 eaten in 2020.

Her FanDuel over/under is 39.5 franks this Thursday with the under a -130 favorite.
