If you’re a Tennessee fan waking up on the morning of July 1, 2024, you’re officially living in a world where the SEC East is no more and Texas and Oklahoma are now members of the Southeastern Conference.

Buckle up.

After months and years of waiting for this to happen, the first day of July officially marks the start of a brand new era of college athletics and the Southeastern Conference.

The move in 2024 marks the third major expansion in SEC history following the addition of Arkansas and South Carolina in 1991 and the addition of Missouri and Texas A&M in 2012. Texas and Oklahoma now make 16 total teams behind the SEC originals: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt.

Texas and Oklahoma bring some serious firepower into the SEC from an athletics standpoint. The Longhorns are one of the top contenders in college football while the Sooners have a softball dynasty on campus in Norman.

Texas was also one of only two nationwide programs to beat Tennessee in the collective 2023-2024 athletics department standings from the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup. Tennessee finished with a program-high No. 3 ranking while Texas topped the list at No. 1.
