Former Tennessee baseball star Trey Lipscomb made his MLB debut on Saturday just two games into the 2024 season.

Starting at third base for the Washington Nationals, Lipscomb went one-of-four at the plate with a strikeout and a stolen base. The former Vol baseball star became the first player in Nationals history to record a hit and a stolen base in his MLB debut.

Lipscomb made his Nationals debut just two games into the 2024 season due to some unfortunate circumstances for another Vol. Former Tennessee third baseman Nick Senzel broke his thumb in Washington’s Opening Day loss against Cincinnati.

The Nationals placed Senzel on the 10-day IL on Friday and called Lipscomb, who was dominant at the plate during spring training, up to the major league squad.

“I worked out with Trey over the offseason and he’s obviously a Tennessee alum too,” Senzel said on Saturday. “He played well in spring training. I thought for a second that he might break with the team. Happy to see him. Obviously it’s under unfortunate circumstances for me but I want him to play well. I just told him to be him and enjoy it.”

After sitting behind Andre Lipcius and Jake Rucker his first three seasons at Tennessee, Lipscomb was a breakout star in his senior season at Tennessee. He was one of the best players in the SEC where he hit .355 with 22 home runs, 44 extra-base hits and 84 RBIs.

The Nationals selected Lipscomb in the third round of the 2022 MLB Draft and the star third baseman made it to the show just under two years later. He’s the second member of Tennessee’s fantastic 2022 team to make it to the MLB, coming in behind only Ben Joyce.
