Tennessee running back Cam Seldon will miss the remainder of the Vols’ spring practice after suffering a shoulder injury earlier this week, Josh Heupel announced during his Wednesday press conference.

“With Cam, unfortunate just in the early part of spring ball had a shoulder injury and had to have surgery,” Heupel said on Wednesday.

Seldon is entering a critical sophomore season in Tennessee’s program. As a freshman, Seldon was the Vols’ fourth string running back behind Jaylen Wright, Jabari Small and Dylan Sampson. But with Wright and Small off to professional football, Sampson steps up into the starting spot with Seldon serving as his backup.

That was the case in the Vols’ Citru Bowl win over Iowa with Seldon rushing for 55 yards on 13 carries. Over the course of his freshman season, Seldon rushed for 106 yards on 12 carries.

A highly touted high school athlete who played both running back and receiver, Seldon’ college position was unclear but his combination of size and speed has made him a natural fit at running back.

Seldon isn’t the only Tennessee running back who’s suffered an injury this spring. Early enrollee freshman running back Peyton Lewis is also out for the remainder of spring practice.

That leaves Dylan Sampson, rising sophomore running back Khalifa Keith and redshirt freshman running back DeSean Bishop as Tennessee’s only healthy scholarship running backs for the remainder of spring practice.

The Vols conclude spring practice on April 13 as they return to Neyland Stadium for the 2024 Orange-And-White game in front of a limited crowd due to stadium construction.
