Former Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs has a new NFL home.
The San Fransisco 49ers signed Dobbs to a one-year deal on Monday night according to his agent Mike McCartney. Dobbs joins a San Fransisco team that’s been the class of the NFC in recent years and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl last season.
Entering his eighth-year in the NFL, he’ll serve as Brock Purdy’s backup quarterback and will join former Tennessee teammate Jauan Jennings. The former Volunteer receiver has carved out a strong role with the 49ers and signed a one-year extension with the team earlier this offseason.

Dobbs has turned into quite the backup quarterback journeyman in his professional career. He’s spent time on the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings.
But it’s really been in the last year where Dobbs has submitted himself as a strong backup quarterback option. He started the final two games of the 2022-23 season for the Tennessee Titans. Arizona traded for Dobbs before the 2023-24 season when it was clear that starter Kyler Murray would miss the first half of the season due to injury.
Dobbs started eight games for the Cardinals before the Vikings traded for him after Kirk Cousins suffered a season ending injury. The dual-threat quarterback started five games for the Vikings before they benched him.
In 13 games last season, Dobbs completed 63% of his passes for 2,468 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He added 421 rushing yards and six rushing touchdown.
Ironically, the Vikings signed 49ers backup quarterback Sam Darnold this offseason while San Fransisco signed Dobbs.
