2024 March Madness betting odds: First round preview, betting favorites

The NCAA Tournament begins today with two First Four games. Wagner faces Howard, and Colorado State battles Virginia. After two more First Four games tomorrow, the First Round officially begins on Thursday with half of the 64-team field beginning play.

Defending champion UConn (+370) is the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament and the betting favorite to win it all again, with Houston (+600), Purdue (+700), and North Carolina (+1700) also on the No.1 line.

The Tar Heels, however, aren’t the favorite to win their region, as Arizona (+1300) is the No. 2 seed and is the consensus favorite to win the West.

Interestingly, UConn is placed right next to two other Final Four teams from last year in this year’s bracket. No. 9 seed FAU takes on No. 8 Northwestern in UConn’s region while San Diego State is a No. 5 seed and battles No. 12 UAB in the first round. If things play out right, UConn would face FAU in the second round and San Diego State in the Sweet 16, a rematch of last year’s title game.

One intriguing set of games when it comes to potential first-round upsets are the matchups between No. 6 seeds and No. 11 seeds.

In the East, No. 6 BYU faces No. 11 Duquesne, with BYU favored by 9.5 points. The Dukes made a miraculous run to win the A-10 Tournament, clinching their first NCAA bid in 47 years. With their longtime coach Keith Dambrot set to retire at the end of the season, Duquesne will be extra motivated to continue their Cinderella run.

In the South we have No. 6 Texas Tech battling No. 11 N.C. State, with the Red Raiders favored by 4.5 points. The Wolfpack faced a tough road to the tournament in a stacked ACC, but overcame all odds in the ACC Tournament to win, defeating North Carolina and Duke in the process and showing their potential against tough competition.

Out in the West region No. 6 Clemson takes on No. 11 New Mexico, with the Lobos actually favored by 1.5 points as the lower seed. Clemson stumbled in their first matchup in the ACC Tournament, losing by 21 points to Boston College. New Mexico meanwhile stormed to a Mountain West title, defeating San Diego State in the championship game.

Finally, in the Midwest, No. 6 South Carolina is a 1.5-point favorite over No. 11 Oregon. South Carolina won their first matchup in the SEC Tournament but were promptly crushed by Auburn in the next round by over 30 points. Oregon, on the other hand, defeated Colorado for the PAC-12 title and carries momentum into the NCAA Tournament as a conference champion.

It’s setting up to be another thrilling NCAA Tournament this year. Be sure to sign up now with our best NCAA Tournament promo codes to get up to $4,900 in bonuses ahead of the First Round and be able to wager on your favorite team.
