Former Tennessee Vol and Tennessee native Trey Smith won the Super Bowl on Sunday night with the Kansas City Chiefs, marking his second straight World Championship.
The Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 25-22 on Sunday night in an overtime thriller. Smith was on the field for the final plays of the game as Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a game-ending touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman late on Sunday night. Smith and the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 Super Bowl
Trey Smith is now the ninth player from the University of Tennessee to win multiple Super Bowls. Smith joins Bill Bates, Craig Colquitt, Jack Reynolds, Mickey Marvin, Raleigh McKenzie, Alvin Harper, Marcus Nash, and Peyton Manning. Bates has three Super Bowl victories while the other seven on the list have two rings.

More from RTI: VFL Jauan Jennings’ Super Bowl MVP Hopes Ended by Late Touchdown in Overtime
The incredible journey began when the Humboldt, TN, native chose to stay in the Volunteer State to play college football for Tennessee. The former five-star recruit started all 12 games for Tennessee during his freshman year but uncovered a daunting challenge in his sophomore season. Despite starting the first seven games of his second year on Rocky Top, Smith’s season was pulled after the Vols’ medical staff discovered blood clots in his lungs.
Smith worked out to get cleared, though, and returned to a starting position for his junior season.
The medical issue bumped Smith down to a sixth-round draft pick, which puts him as one of the most valuable draft picks of all time with two Super Bowl rings in his first three seasons in the NFL. Smith is a critical lineman as Patrick Mahomes is one of the most effective and dangerous quarterbacks in the NFL, especially from out of the pocket.
With an improbable Super Bowl run in overtime on Sunday night in Las Vegas and a 25-22 win over the San Francisco 49ers, VFL and Tennessee native Trey Smith is a back-to-back Super Bowl winner and the ninth multi-time winner from the University of Tennessee (first since VFL Peyton Manning).
