The 49ers were one of the best teams against the run all season, although they haven’t been as stout in the postseason. However, that’s not the case through the air. San Francisco surrendered the fifth-most receiving yards to running backs this season and the highest number of receiving touchdowns to backs. Given Isiah Pacheco’s importance to the offense, the Chiefs are likely to adjust his targets to maximize his production in the game.

Pacheco and Travis Kelce are Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s favorite weapons in the offense. So, they generate the most attention from opposing defenses. Although they have been productive, the attention they receive has created a need for others to stop up, and Rashee Rice has done just that for the team in critical moments. He has only scored once in the postseason, but he is being targeted in an abundance. That sets him up well to cover his line in this play.

Mahomes threw for exactly 262 yards against the Dolphins in the Wild Card round. That was the worst defense he has faced. Against the two solid defenses he has faced, he has been a little more defendable. He isn’t compiling the video game stats people are used to seeing from him, but they are still getting the job done thanks to their defense. That’s a trend that is likely to continue in this one.

The 49ers passing offense relies heavily on the play action pass for explosive plays to get them in scoring position. Compiling big plays against the Chiefs is a tall task thanks to their aggressive defensive nature. They were in the top six in blitz percentage this season, which leaves QBs little to no time to take deep shots down the field. The Chiefs are aware of their style and will make it a point of emphasis to limit those shots, which will keep Brock Purdy focused on more intermediate routes.

Fortunately for the 49ers’ offense, the Chiefs’ aggressiveness usually leads to big nights for opposing tight ends. Due to sending an extra man quite often, tight ends in hot routes are a weak spot for Kansas City. This season, they were third in yards allowed to tight ends at 1,315 total yards, and they were tied for fourth in touchdowns allowed to tight ends at eight. That sets up a big night for George Kittle, who can be as explosive as his counterpart in KC in Travis Kelce.

Last but not least, in this parlay play is Christian McCaffrey. In eighteen games this season, the star running back has only rushed for less than 90 yards in seven contests. In four of those games, he has carried the ball less than his season average. On the biggest stage of the season after many years of coming close, San Fran isn’t likely to go away from who got them to this point. Look for him to get ample carries, and even if KC does well defending him, he can only be contained but for so long.
