New Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is already looking for a new offensive coordinator. Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb is leaving Tuscaloosa after just a few weeks to become the Seattle Seahawks new offensive coordinator.

247sports Matt Zenitz first reported the coaching move late on Friday night right as the 30-day window for Alabama football players to enter the transfer portal closed.

There had been reports and speculation linking Grubb to the Seattle offensive coordinator job for the last week so the movement doesn’t come as a huge surprise. However, Grubb did tell The Red Elephant Club that he planned on staying as Alabama’s offensive coordinator earlier this week.

While no other Alabama coaching moves are official, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that Alabama offensive line coach Scott Huff plans on following Grubb to Seattle while tight ends coach Nick Sheridan and receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard both plan on staying at Alabama and could be elevated to co-offensive coordinator.

Grubb’s departure to the NFL is a big blow for new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer. Grubb has been with DeBoer for 16 of the last 17 seasons. The only year Grubb didn’t coach under DeBoer was in 2019 when Grubb stayed at Fresno State after DeBoer took the offensive coordinator job at Indiana. The duo has coached together at four different schools (five if you include the brief tenure at Alabama).

In Seattle, Grubb is a part of a completely new coaching staff. Longtime head coach Pete Carroll stepped down earlier this offseason and Seattle hired Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to replace him. Under the defensive minded head coach, Grubb will run the Seahawks’ offense himself.

Kalen DeBoer gets his first taste of the Alabama-Tennessee rivalry this season when the Crimson Tide travel to Knoxville on the Third Saturday in October.
