Tennessee basketball knocked off LSU 88-68 in a midweek SEC matchup on Wednesday night. The Vols jumped out to a 15-1 lead and used elite shooting to take a 23-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
After a handful of slow starts, the Vols have now come out fast in consecutive games. Against the Tigers, Tennessee shot an unbelievable nine-of-14 from three-point range.
“We want to get out and run,” Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said. “That’s how we practice. You guys watch us. We want to get out and go with it and hopefully our bench can keep giving us something and get more consistent there.”
Zakai Zeigler built off his dominant performance against Kentucky by scoring 17 points on six-of-nine shooting to go along with nine assists, five steals and four rebounds.
Fellow guards Jordan Gainey and Dalton Knecht also had strong performances against LSU. Gainey totaled a season-high 18 points to go along with three steals. Knecht totaled 27 points on nine-of-19 shooting from the field in a typical strong shooting performance.
But Knecht was more than just a scorer against the Tigers, totaling seven rebounds, six assists and three blocks.
Despite trailing by 26 points early in the second half, LSU came charging back in the second half cutting the deficit to eight points with five minutes left in the game before the Vols finished the game strong with a 16-4 run to earn a lopsided victory.
