Tennessee basketball heads to Nashville on Saturday looking to build upon its three-game winning streak and to avenge last season’s heartbreaking loss against Vanderbilt.

The Vols were off in the midweek after dominating Florida and Alabama at home last week and are tied atop the SEC standings with a 14-4 (4-1 SEC) record. Vanderbilt is in the midst of an extremely disappointing season and are still looking for its first conference win of the season.

Here’s everything to know about the rivalry matchup.

What Tennessee HC Rick Barnes Said About Vanderbilt

On what stands out about Vanderbilt

“Just dynamic backcourt play. I mean, maybe as good a back court combination as there is in the league. And you all know the respect that I have from Coach Stackhouse and the way he builds his program, and he’s had some tough luck, obviously. But when I look at it, someone was asking me the other day about him and I was just talking about one, he has great schemes. Really a lot of really good schemes. (They) Are playing some different defenses, multiple defenses. So you’re going to see some pressure, see some full court pressure. A little one-three-one, man defense and have shown two-three. But it’s what he does, not only with his schemes, but I think they do as good a job as any coach in the country at developing players the way they do. So obviously I have the utmost respect for him and what he’s doing there.”

On if there are challenges shooting at Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gymnasium

“I don’t know that I’d say that. I mean, from a coaching standpoint, it’s different. From a playing standpoint. I don’t know if it is or it isn’t. But it is what it is and you deal with it.”

On what they hope the players who returned from learned about last season’s loss at Vanderbilt:

“It’s the end of a game. I mean, you know, I think back and (Julian Phillips) had a wide open dunk and (we) missed some free throws, and then we left the shooter (open) in the corner. But every game, whether it’s that game or any game, we scrub it out, talk about it, and hope that you don’t make those mistakes again.”

Prediction

Road wins are never lay downs in conference play but this is as close to one as you’ll find. Vanderbilt has played better over the last few weeks but it hasn’t resulted in a win yet and they haven’t truly been competitive in many of the losses.

Wacky things can happen at Memorial Gymasium and Jerry Stackhouse’s teams have found ways to crack Tennessee’s defense about as well as anyone over the last few years. But if the secondary ticket market is any indication, Tennessee is going to have a major crowd advantage and there’s just very little to like about Vanderbilt in this matchup.

Perhaps the best thing you can say for Vanderbilt’s chances is that they’re shooting an astounding 24% from three-point range in conference play. They’re due for a strong shooting night to regress to the mean. But with its limited rim scoring opportunities, Vanderbilt will need to hit double-digit triples to have any chance in this one.

On the other end, look for Jonas Aidoo to continue his strong play on the offensive end against an undersized Vanderbilt front court.
