The Vols are looking to avenge last season’s 66-65 loss in Nashville when Vanderbilt’s Tyrin Lawrence hit a game winning corner triple as the clock expired. Prior to that loss, Tennessee had won 11 straight meetings against its instate rival.
Tennessee coach Rick Barnes is 13-4 against Vanderbilt in his eight-plus seasons as the Vols head coach, fully capitalizing on a down Commodore program.
More From RTI: Everything Rick Barnes Said Before Tennessee Faces Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt is in the midst of an extremely disappointing season. After its win over Tennessee sparked a strong close to the season that almost ended in a NCAA Tournament berth, the Commodores are off to just a 5-13 start this season and are currently winless in SEC play.
Tennessee enters the matchup coming off a week break thanks to a midweek open date in the middle of conference play. The Vols are 14-4 (4-1 SEC) entering the matchup and are tied with Auburn for the top spot in the SEC. Rick Barnes’ ninth Tennessee team has won three straight games including blowout home victories over Florida and Alabama last week.
Tipoff between Tennessee and Vanderbilt is at 6 p.m. ET at Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday night. Dave Neal and Jon Sundvold are on the call for the SEC Network.
