Where Tennessee Basketball Ranks In Jan. 8 Associated Press Top 25

Tennessee basketball stayed put at No. 5 in this week’s AP Top 25 after a 2-0 week that saw the Vols win their SEC opener against Ole Miss.

The Vols rolled past Norfolk State 87-50 on Tuesday before dominating then-No. 22 Ole Miss 80-64 in a SEC opening statement victory in Knoxville Saturday night. With the victory, Tennessee now boasts an 11-3 (1-0 SEC) record.

Tennessee is the highest rated SEC team in this week’s AP Poll coming in ahead of No. 6 Kentucky and No. 16 Auburn. Ole Miss, South Carolina and Alabama all received votes in the Jan. 8 AP Poll.

The Vols now leave Knoxville and head on their first road trip of the SEC season this week. Tennessee faces a strong Mississippi State team on Wednesday night before facing Georgia on Saturday afternoon. Mississippi State projects to be a NCAA Tournament team and boasts an elite defense and a physical front court. Georgia defeated Missouri in its SEC opener and enters the week with nine straight wins.

Rick Barnes’ ninth Tennessee team has plenty of experience playing on the road so far this season. The Vols won an exhibition game at Michigan State and a regular season game at Wisconsin while falling to North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Tipoff between Tennessee and Mississippi State is at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday night. The SEC Network is broadcasting the game.
