The 30-day transfer window closed that began shortly after conference championships officially closed at midnight on Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean that Tennessee players can no longer enter the transfer portal.
There is a clause in the updated rules that allows players to enter the transfer portal up to five days after their teams final game. For Tennessee’s sake, that means that Volunteer players can enter the transfer portal through the end of the day on Saturday.
And, in actuality, news could come a few days after that. The rules state that players only have to file paperwork saying they intend to enter the transfer portal by that date which leaves open the possibility for a few stragglers to not announce that they’re entering the transfer portal until early next week.
Still, Saturday Jan. 6 is the big day for Tennessee football fans to keep an eye on as far as Volunteer players entering the transfer portal.

The transfer portal opens again in late April for two weeks so players can enter the transfer portal after spring practice. This transfer period is typically much slower than the December period.
Eleven Tennessee football players have entered the transfer portal to date with just 10 of them being scholarship players. The Vols have taken by far their biggest losses in the defensive backfield where four cornerbacks and three safeties entered the portal in December.
Nine of Tennessee’s eleven transfers have already committed to new schools with four landing in the SEC, one landing in the ACC, one landing in the Big 12, two landing in the AAC and one landing at a FCS school.
There’s no obvious candidate from Tennessee to enter the transfer portal in the next week. However, with Bru McCoy returning for his senior season the Vols’ receiver room is now extremely crowded which could lead to a potential deflection.
