McCoy transferred to Tennessee before the 2022 season and started all 18 games he’s been active for. As a junior in 2022, McCoy caught 52 passes for 667 and three touchdowns as a key part of the Vols’ program record breaking offense.
The physical receiver returned for his senior season. As Tennessee’s top receiver caught 17 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns in four games and change this season before suffering a fractured-dislocation of his right ankle during the Vols’ win over South Carolina.
McCoy has one final season of eligibility since he redshirted during the 2019 season and NCAA COVID-19 eligibility relief during the 2020 season and after his senior season ended early, McCoy is returning for a sixth and final collegiate season.
More From RTI: Former Tennessee Quarterback Plans To Reenter Transfer Portal
Getting the steady receiver back for one more season is a major win for Tennessee and particularly for redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava who is stepping into the starting quarterback job. Prior to the Citrus Bowl, Iamaleava shared that he was recruiting McCoy to return for one final season.
“I’m trying to get Bru back,” Iamaleava said. “It’s huge, man. I think a guy like that coming back, he’ll be the leader of the receiver room— we’ll be a little young next year, so just him coming back would be huge for me and I’m working on it.”
With McCoy returning, Tennessee’s receiver room ahead of the 2024 season currently contains McCoy, Squirrel White, Dont’e Thornton, Kaleb Webb, Chas Nimrod, Tulane transfer Chris Brazzell II and freshmen Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley. Of course there’s the possibility that some of the receivers could enter the transfer portal before the 2024 season.
