Texas A&M receiver transfer Evan Stewart is the top remaining uncommitted player in the transfer portal. The Vols have been linked to the talented receiver since he entered the portal but it appears Tennessee won’t be the destination.

Josh Heupel and his staff are no longer pursuing the highly touted receiver according to the report from On3’s Pete Nakos.

It’s been a unique portal recruitment for the highly touted receiver transfer. Alabama and Texas appeared to be the top contenders shortly after he entered the transfer portal before backing off their recruitment. Nakos previously stated that Florida State, Ole Miss, Oregon and Southern Cal were strong contenders for Stewart alongside Tennessee but both the Rebels and Vols no longer seem to be likely options.

In two seasons at Texas A&M, Stewart caught 91 total passes for 1,163 yards and six total touchdowns. Stewart missed a large part of the 2023 season due to injury, but in eight games —largely with a backup quarterback— the Memphis native totaled 514 yards and four touchdowns. In the Aggies’ 20-13 loss at Tennessee, Stewart caught four passes for 48 yards.

Tennessee’s already added one transfer receiver this offseason— Tulane’s Chris Brazzell II. In a breakout redshirt freshman season in New Orleans, Brazzell caught 44 passes for 711 yards and five touchdowns.

Brazzell joins a receiver room that is returning the majority of its key pieces from the 2023 season including Squirrel White, Dont’e Thornton, Kaleb Webb and Chas Nimrod. Senior Ramel Keyton is out of eligibility while senior Bru McCoy has one remaining year of eligibility but has not yet announced his intentions for it.

The Vols also add talented prep receivers Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley to their roster this offseason. The development of Tennessee’s receivers will be key for a Volunteer offense looking to improve around redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava ahead of the 2024 season.

  1. He went to HS in Frisco TX. He sat out his Sr year because he failed a drug test and he his low character played a part also. Horrible teammate and poison to any team that picks him up.
