Tennessee’s Tobe Awaka and Freddie Dilione are both getting closer to returning to the court for the Vols, head coach Rick Barnes shared on Monday.
Awaka, who’s been dealing with an ankle injury since the Vols’ Maui Invitational opener and miss last week’s loss at North Carolina, looks likely to return to the court on Tuesday night against George Mason.
“He was full go yesterday,” Barnes said. “And if things stay like it is, he’ll cleared and he had a good day yesterday and we expect him to do it today.”
The sophomore power forward missed the rest of the game he suffered the injury in (Syracuse) but played the next two days in losses against Purdue in Kansas. Awaka did not participate in Tennessee’s practice last Monday before not playing at North Carolina.
Dilione is continuing to work back from a partially torn plantar fascia in his foot. The redshirt freshman guard suffered the injury in the opening minutes of the Vols’ win over Wofford.

The combo guard was dealing with foot pain before the Wofford game but it’s believed that he suffered the partial tear in that game.
“He’s starting to work his way back in,” Barnes said. “He hasn’t been full going practice yet. But I think we’ll be able to use them some tomorrow if it goes well today in practice.”
Tennessee has been dealing with injuries all season and dating back to the preseason when Zakai Zeigler was working back from a torn ACL and a number of other players dealt with minor injuries. Those absences have hurt Tennessee’s ability to play at an elite level but have bolstered its depth.
“It’s different,” Barnes said. “But I look at it the other way as giving other guys a chance to get some minutes that we know we’re gonna need ’em all at some point in time. But obviously we like to have everybody. We haven’t had everybody at their best yet.”
Tennessee returns to the court on Tuesday night when they host George Mason at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center. Tipoff is at 6:30 p.m. ET with SEC Network+ and ESPN+ streaming the game.
