Betting Odds for Indianapolis vs. Tennessee
The Colts have been a pleasant surprise for the NFL. After losing starting rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, this team appeared to be in shambles, and it was almost the expectation for the Colts to get routed in every game. The Titans have been on the darker side for a bit longer. RB Derrick Henry has come up short when the Titans have needed him most, starting QB Ryan Tannehill has been sidelined with injury, and backup QB Will Levis has been inconsistent and showing holes like Swiss cheese. Despite all of this, these two teams are still within striking distance of earning a playoff spot.
Indianapolis Colts Defying the Odds
This team has defied the expectations and are on a three-game win streak while finding its defensive identity in the last couple of weeks. QB Gardner Minshew, who took the NFL by storm in Jacksonville just a few short seasons ago, has found himself a new home and earned every bit of respect from this team and fanbase. With RB Jonathan Taylor out due to a thumb injury, Zach Moss has a chance to replicate his early season success when Taylor was sidelined during his holdout. The Colts are in second place in the AFC South — two games behind the Jaguars. Winning this game would keep the Colts close enough to the Jags to apply more pressure.
In his most recent game against the Buccaneers, Minshew threw for 251 yards and completed 24 passes on 41 attempts and no touchdowns. Minshew and the Colts relied on the running more in this game with Jonathan Taylor nabbing 91 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Zach Moss also contributed 55 yards on 8 carries. This defense also deserves its flowers, and when playing against Tampa Bay QB Baker Mayfield, this defense pressured him all game. The Colts’ defense had six sacks and multiple takeaways. This team will have to be ready for a trench battle against the Titans, and if it can limit penalties on offense, Indy might just be in control to bring its record up to 7-5.
Tennessee Titans Look to Defend Home Turf
The Titans have been up and down all season, and while not completely eliminated from playoff contention, it does seem a bit like pie in the sky at this point so late in the season. With Tannehill sidelined due to an ankle injury, the Titans looked to Levis as a way to salvage this season. Since his impressive debut against the Falcons that saw him throw four touchdowns and 238 yards, Levis has slowly come back down to Earth. Levis has only thrown a touchdown pass in one other game, against the Jaguars. The other three games have resulted in no touchdowns and are his bottom three games in terms of completion percentage. It’s a small sample size but it’s becoming more clear every week that Levis is regressing and that his debut game was an anomaly. While it isn’t time to panic yet, playing against a white hot defense even at home is cause for concern.
The Titans can shift the momentum in their favor if Henry can run full steam ahead. In his last game against the Panthers, Henry ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries while averaging just over four yards per carry. But the two games prior, Henry ran for 62 yards combined. It’s been a boom or bust situation with Henry, and hopefully the Alabama alum can break away for one or two decent carries.
In his five games started, Levis’ worst game was 48.7% and everything else from there is up. The touchdown numbers could use some work, but with a rookie quarterback comes growing pains. To snag a win, the running back tandem of Henry and Tyjae Spears will need to find success on the ground. Levis can’t be afraid to take a shot down the field either. Receiver DeAndre Hopkins knows this defense all too well having faced this team twice a year in Houston. Hopkins should be in line for a big game and hopefully Levis can rise to the occasion. A win here could kick start a streak for the Titans, and being only two games behind the Colts, Tennessee could make a run as the season winds down. A loss here would ultimately be the nail in the coffin and would have the Titans making early Draft plans.
Prediction: Colts Will Cover
While the Titans this season have a 4-1 record at home, these last few games have been rough. Up and down games on a week to week basis from Henry and Levis contribute to the lack of rhythm. The Colts are peaking at the right time, and while Taylor is out, Moss has proven he can handle a sizable workload. This Indy defense has found itself, and after shutting down someone as dynamic as Mayfield last week, this team should be able to handle business against Levis and the Titans. Caesars Sportsbook has the spread for this game set at 1 point in favor of the Colts, so bet cautiously. The Over/Under is 43 points and with these defenses, the under looks to be a promising line.
