How Tennessee’s Opponents Fared in Week 13

Each week, Rocky Top Insider will take a look at how all 12 opponents on Tennessee’s 2023 schedule fared.

From UTSA to Georgia, let’s take a look at how the Vols’ 2023 opponents in the 13th week of the college football season.

Week 1 Opponent: Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia got blown out by Virginia Tech 55-17 in Charlottesville in the season finale.

The bad loss dropped the Cavaliers to a 3-9 (2-6 ACC) record for the 2023 season. Virginia is not bowl eligible.

Week 2 Opponent: Austin Peay Governors

Austin Peay lost a heartbreaker to Chattanooga 24-21 on a last-minute field goal. The loss was the Governors first since Week 2 at Tennessee, and it caused Austin Peay to not be eligible to go to their conference championship game, as Chattanooga will face Furman.

Austin Peay finished the regular season with a 9-3 record.

Week 3 Opponent: Florida Gators

Florida battled but fell short against Florida State at home in the rivalry game, losing 24-15.

The Gators finished with a 5-7 (3-5 SEC) record and are not bowl eligible in year two under Billy Napier, who is now 11-14 as UF head coach.

Week 4 Opponent: UTSA Roadrunners

UTSA lost a big game at Tulane Friday night, 29-16. The Roadrunners needed to win the game to reach their conference championship game but fell short.

Still, it was a nice year for UTSA who are bowl eligible at 8-4.

Week 5 Opponent: South Carolina Gamecocks

South Carolina lost to Clemson in a disappointing offensive effort, 16-7. The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 5-7 (3-5 SEC), meaning they aren’t bowl eligible.

Week 6 Opponent: Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M was up for awhile against LSU but couldn’t hold on, falling 42-30. The loss dropped the Aggies to 7-5 on the season with a 4-4 SEC record. The Aggies tied with Kentucky as UT’s best Power Five win this year with a 7-5 record.

Week 7 Opponent: Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama won an instant Iron Bowl classic in Jordan-Hare Stadium over Auburn, 27-24. The ‘Milroe Miracle’ or “Milthrow’ on 4th & 31 resulted in a touchdown which allowed Alabama to secure the victory and finish 11-1 (8-0 SEC) on the year.
Week 8 Opponent: Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky impressively upset 10-win Louisville 38-31 on the road. The rivalry game win improved the Wildcats record to 7-5 (3-5 SEC) on the season.

Week 9 Opponent: UConn Huskies

UConn finished their regular season on a high note, beating UMass 31-18. The win marked the second in a row for the Huskies, who finished with a 3-9 record.

Week 10 Opponent: Missouri Tigers

Missouri trounced Arkansas on the road, 48-14, to finish with a 10-2 (6-2) SEC record. An impressive season finale capped off an even more impressive win for the Tigers, as they won 10 games for the first time in the Eli Drinkwitz era.

Week 11 Opponent: Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia survived an upset bid from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, winning 31-23.

The win was Georgia’s 12th of the season as they finished undefeated for the third straight season.

Week 12 Opponent: Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt lost to Tennessee 48-24 in Neyland Stadium this past weekend. It was the Commodores’ 10th loss in a row, and Clark Lea’s squad finished 2-10 with a winless 0-8 SEC record.
