No. 7 Tennessee went 1-2 in the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational over the span of a three-day stretch in Honolulu this week.
The Vols started the week strong with a 17-point win over Syracuse on Monday afternoon but fell to No. 2 Purdue and the reigning National Player of the Year Zach Edey during the semifinal game on Tuesday night. Tennessee closed out the tournament with a loss to No. 1 Kansas in the third-place game on Wednesday afternoon.
Tennessee has areas that need improvement, certainly, but facing the AP No. 1 and No. 2 teams on back-to-back days is a challenge that head coach Rick Barnes and his team welcome. The Vols will be able to study the tape against potential Final Four teams and build on that as they continue their non-conference slate into SEC season.
Forward Dalton Knecht continued his strong scoring stretch as the leading scorer in Tennessee’s games against Syracuse (17) and Purdue (16) and the second-leading scorer against Kansas (13). Knecht’s performance over the three-day stretch earned him Maui Invitational All-Tournament honors on Thursday.
