No. 13 Ole Miss at Mississippi State, Thursday 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Year after year, the Egg Bowl between Ole Miss and Mississippi State is one of the most entertaining games in college football. This year’s edition should be no different. Lane Kiffin and the Rebels enter this matchup with a solid 9-2 record, and they are looking primed for a birth in a New Year’s Six bowl game. On the other side, Mississippi State head coach Zach Arnett was fired on Nov. 13 after posting a record of 4-6. The Bulldogs beat Southern Miss 41-20 last week without Arnett, but this matchup against the Rebels poses a much tougher challenge.
Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart is having a sensational year, completing 66.4% of his passes for 2,889 yards and 19 touchdowns. The Rebels play at one of the fastest paces in the nation, and Dart’s efficiency has gotten better each week. Mississippi State’s offense has struggled to put up points in SEC play. In fact, the Bulldogs have scored more than 14 points in just two of seven SEC games, and are averaging just 13.4 points per game in conference play. Long story short, the Bulldog offense might have trouble keeping up with the Rebels. Consider backing Ole Miss -10 in this one.
Texas A&M at No. 15 LSU, Saturday Noon ET (ESPN)
In one of the biggest stories of the season, Texas A&M fired head coach Jimbo Fisher on Nov. 12. His contract buyout was more than $76 million, and the Aggies are now in search of a new head coach. The uncertainty at Texas A&M is a bit of a concern as the Aggies head to Baton Rouge to face LSU on Saturday afternoon. Tiger QB Jayden Daniels is firmly in the Heisman conversation, and while the Tigers have suffered three losses, the program is heading in the right direction under coach Brian Kelly.
LSU has yet to lose at home this season. In addition, the Tigers are 5-1 against the spread on their own turf. It is senior day in Baton Rouge, so the home crowd will be sure to be amped up. The Aggies have lost all three true road games this season, and things might not get any easer for them in a raucous environment at Tiger Stadium. Look for the Tigers to take care of business in this one and consider backing LSU -11.5.
No. 8 Alabama at Auburn, Saturday 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)
Alabama has won seven of the last 10 meetings against Auburn, including the last three. The Crimson Tide are a perfect 7-0 in SEC play this season, and they have clinched their spot in the SEC Championship game against No. 1 Georgia on Dec. 2. Despite already having a spot in the conference title game, don’t expect the Crimson Tide to be caught looking ahead to next week. This is one of the most competitive rivalries in all of college football, and Nick Saban and company do not want to suffer a loss to their bitter rivals ahead of the SEC Championship game.
Auburn has had a bit of a tough year under new head coach Hugh Freeze. The Tigers are bowl eligible with a record of 6-5, but they are just 3-4 in conference play. Last week, the Tigers lost to New Mexico State as 25.5 point favorites at home. That loss was nothing short of shocking, and it might be tough for Freeze and company to bounce back against the No. 8 team in the country. The good news is that Auburn has played Alabama tough at home in recent years. Auburn has won three of the last five Iron Bowl’s at Jordan-Hare Stadium, and one loss came by two points in overtime.
That being said, Alabama’s defense could be too much for Auburn’s offense to handle in this one. They are allowing just 17.4 points per game to their opponents, and while Auburn’s offense has looked formidable against lesser SEC teams like Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and Mississippi State, they have struggled against top teams in the conference like Georgia, Texas A&M, and LSU. Not to mention they only scored 10 points against New Mexico State last week. The Tiger defense has held its own, and with the total set at 48.5 points, consider the Under.
