Tennessee’s offseason transfers led the way offensively during the Vols’ 80-42 season opening win over Tennessee Tech on Monday night in Thompson Boling Arena at the Food City Center.
Forward Dalton Knecht led Tennesssee with 17 points while guard Jordan Gainey wasn’t far behind with 14 of his own.
The Vols were looking for their rhythm offensively during the first few minutes of the game until Gainey came in off the bench and provided Tennessee with a jumpstart on the that end. Gainey’s scoring ability could prove useful as an important sixth man off the bench depending on how the rotations shake out throughout the year.
At the same time, though, it was Knecht that really impressed throughout the game on Monday. Knecht’s fluidity on the offensive end led to 6-of-11 shooting on the night with two three pointers to go along with three total rebounds in 22 minutes.
After the conclusion of the game on Monday, both Knecht and Gainey met with the media to share their thoughts on their first official game with the Volunteers. Knecht spoke about playing with a chip on his shoulder, Gainey talked about playing while under the weather, and both players detailed what it’s like playing with Zakai Zeigler on the court.
