Week 8 has a lot of great matchups on the schedule, and one getting a lot of attention is the ranked showdown for the Volunteers and Crimson Tide. Tennessee, fresh off its win against a scrappy Texas A&M team, looks forward to improving its record to 6-1. It is notoriously difficult for any team in college football to win in Tuscaloosa, and this game will be no exception. This year, Saban looks to correct what happened last year with Jalen Milroe at quarterback. The Crimson Tide are 8.5-point favorites, and the Over/Under at 46.5 points.
This season has been a bit rocky for Alabama and we have seen the Tide slip in their pacing as of late, but Saban is usually pretty quick to remind his peers of how he handles his business. Last week in a close win against Arkansas, we witnessed Milroe throw for 238 yards with 10 completions on 21 attempts along with a rushing touchdown. Wideout Kobe Prentice broke out for a 79 yard receiving touchdown late in the first quarter and Amari Niblack caught a 29-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter. Despite the success through the air, the dual-threat Milroe struggled on the ground. The Razorbacks kept Milroe to an astounding -19 rushing yards.
Tennessee looks to repeat history this Saturday with a win on the road. Last year, kicker Chase McGrath was the unsung hero and now QB Joe Milton looks to take up that mantle. Milton threw for 100 yards with 11 completions on 22 attempts. And one touchdown and one interception in last week’s win against Texas A&M. A major key was the Vols’ defense. Tennessee has a far and away superior defense to what Arkansas has. With the Razorbacks limiting Milroe’s rushing, they kept it a one-score game and almost pulled off an upset. Getting Milroe uncomfortable early with a pass rush from Tennessee is easier said than done but not impossible. The next step is for the Vols to step up the offensive execution. For Milton, 100 passing yards and a 50% completion percentage may not be enough to silence Alabama. If he can get more than 150 passing yards and his completion percentage around 65%, that will give them enough of an opportunity to win.
Factoring in how Alabama has not looked as stout and defiant as it has in years past, as well as a motivated Tennessee team looking to pull off an upset, we side with Tennessee against the spread. The Volunteers hold their own thanks to a defensive spectacle and pass their biggest test of the year to date.
