SEC Football Odds for Week 6
LSU vs. Missouri
A game that went down to the wire saw LSU taking a loss against Ole Miss. QB Jayden Daniels had an impressive outing with 414 passing yards, four touchdowns and a 75% completion rate. Despite his Herculean effort, many have come to criticize his fumble late in the first quarter. Ole Miss did not have one turnover and Daniels’ one untimely mistake shifted this game into the favor of the Rebels. Missouri and LSU have offensive schemes that torch just about anyone they play, forcing defenses to adapt on the fly. So far the season, Missouri quarterback Brady Cook has 11 touchdowns to zero interceptions and a 74.5% completion rate. While LSU’s Jayden Daniels has 16 touchdowns with two interceptions and a current 73.1% completion rate.
Missouri has been fighting to prove it belongs in the ranks all season and they get what many consider to be their first real test. Missouri has improved week over week since its second game in terms of scoring. Last week Missouri put up 38 points in a win against Vanderbilt, improving their record to 5-0. Brady Cook had 395 passing yards and four touchdowns, while also completing 33 passes on 41 attempts. Missouri also ran for 137 yards with Nathaniel Peat and Cody Schrader leading the charge. This defense however has taken a step back from its successful campaign in 2022, and head coach Eli Drinkwitz will have his hands full trying to contain and limit a rowdy LSU offense.
These two teams share a lot of similarities. Both quarterbacks have an incredible offense built around them, and both have immaculate throwing capabilities. Both teams have a defense that is gifted but struggles to stay consistent, with penalties being a heavy presence. LSU is a 6.5-point favorite and that’s largely in part to the talent this LSU offense has. While Missouri has regressed slightly since last season, this defense has the grit to make this upset happen.
Texas A&M vs. Alabama
Texas A&M has lost starting quarterback Connor Weigman to a season ending foot injury, and Max Johnson has been thrust into the starting role. Despite the blindsiding news of Weigman, Johnson put up a decent performance. The defense and special teams stepped up in a big way and contributed to the win against Arkansas. Max Johnson completed 17 passes on 28 attempts while also throwing for 210 yards with two touchdowns, and an interception. This week Johnson will be put to the ultimate test, with arguably their most important game of the season riding on his shoulders.
Alabama has gotten better in these last few weeks since having lost to the Texas Longhorns in week 2. Alabama starting quarterback Jalen Milroe passed for 164 yards and had 10 completions on 12 attempts. Milroe also added to his stats with 69 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in a thrashing 40-17 win against Mississippi State. This performance showcased just how efficient he can be. Jase McClellan got in on the fun with 63 rushing yards and a touchdown late in the second quarter contributing to the 193 total rushing yards.
The Aggies sit at 4-1 overall and tied with Alabama at 2-0 in the SEC West. This matchup has all the hype and even higher stakes and it’s all perfectly reasonable. Alabama is at a 1.5-point favorite and that indicates how close this game could be. Alabama is also at 4-1 and since its rough loss to Texas, seems to be going in the right direction, although they don’t look like the traditionally flawless program as we are used to seeing. Texas A&M’s defense has played unbelievably well and is sure to have Milroe on high alert throughout the game. The adversity that both teams are facing will keep this game close but stating that the Crimson Tide are coming into this game better prepared is not a stretch. Alabama edges out Texas A&M in a vigorous battle on Saturday at Kyle Field.
Kentucky vs. Georgia
Kentucky came out on top in their first real test of the season against Florida. Quarterback Devin Leary surprisingly had a less than stellar game, throwing for 69 yards and one touchdown. The rushing game certainly came away with the lion’s share of praise as Re’Mahn Davis ran wild with 280 yards by himself, along with three total touchdowns. He averaged 10.8 yards per carry. This type of performance gives a much needed confidence boost when the defending champs are your next opponent. Kentucky improves to 5-0 in the SEC and will be traveling to Athens to play the Bulldogs. While Leary’s performance could have been better, he still sits at a 57.7% completion rate and a strong run game to stand behind.
Georgia had the college football world on the edge of its seat this past weekend by playing a down-to-the-wire game with Auburn. Brock Bowers came to the rescue to secure the win for the Bulldogs late in the fourth quarter. What we did see in the game against Auburn was that quarterback Carson Beck does not collapse under pressure. Late in the game, Beck took a sack and it appeared that Auburn had Georgia on the ropes. Instead of succumbing to the pressure, Beck stepped into the pocket and delivered a touchdown pass to Bowers to put them up 27-20 on the very next play. Beck finished with 23 completions on 33 attempts and 313 passing yards.
The reality is that Georgia has a glaring weakness in stopping the run, and with Kentucky fresh off the rushing performance it had in the previous week, this could be disastrous for the Bulldogs. Winning in Athens as a road team is an unbelievably difficult task but not impossible. Georgia’s last home loss came from South Carolina in 2019 losing 20-17. Kentucky quarterback Devin Leary has to step up if they look to have a chance against the Bulldogs. Georgia is a 14.5 point favorite as they look to stay at number one overall in the country. The game plan is simple for Georgia, stopping the run is the key to a win. Georgia beats Kentucky in a game where they cover the spread and stay undefeated.
