Seven teams from the Southeastern Conference are ranked inside the AP Top 25 poll for the second straight week. The SEC boasted six teams during Week 1, 2, and 4 while Week 3 only had five teams ranked in the poll. The conference achieved the seven-team mark during Week 5 and carried that into Week 6 with one team falling out and one jumping in.
Despite some closer-than-expected games from the Bulldogs this season, Georgia (5-0, 2-0 SEC) remains the No. 1 team in the country after a 40-yard go-ahead touchdown to beat Auburn with less than three minutes on the clock.
Still on the outside of the Top 10 looking in, Alabama (4-1, 2-0 SEC) rose up one spot to No. 11 after defeating Mississippi State in Starkville over the weekend. The Tide powered to a 31-10 lead at halftime and didn’t look back during the second half.
Ole Miss (4-1, 1-1 SEC) jumped up four spots to No. 16 after a back-and-forth game with LSU (3-2, 2-1 SEC) in Oxford over the weekend. The Rebels handed the Tigers their second loss of the season with a go-ahead touchdown pass with only 39 seconds left in the game.
The loss subsequently dropped the Tigers from No. 13 to No. 23 in the rankings as the only two-loss team in the poll.
For a second straight week, there is a four-team logjam in the 20s of the rankings. Undefeated Kentucky (5-0, 2-0 SEC) enters the Top 25 for the first time at No. 20 after running through Florida in Lexington while undefeated Missouri (5-0, 1-0 SEC) lands at No. 21 following a beatdown of Vanderbilt in Nashville.
Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC), surprisingly enough, dropped one spot from No. 21 to No. 22 after a 41-20 victory over South Carolina as the Florida loss still continues to weigh heavy on the Vols’ early-season rankings.
