Tennessee receiver Bru McCoy underwent surgery for a fractured-dislocation of his  right ankle Sunday morning at UT Medical Center.

“Bru McCoy underwent successful surgery this morning at after suffering a fractured-dislocation of his right ankle on Saturday night,” Tennessee said in a statement Sunday afternoon.  “Bru and his family appreciate all of your prayers and support since last night and in the days ahead. Bru has displayed unwavering toughness, character and leadership as a Vol on and off the field, and he now begins the road to recovery determined to make this just a minor setback in his football journey.”

McCoy suffered the gruesome injury in the second quarter of Tennessee’s 41-20 victory over South Carolina at Neyland Stadium Saturday night. The senior receiver caught a slant and turned up field to gain 19 yards before suffering the ankle injury on the tackle.

The former Southern Cal transfer has been one of Tennessee’s top receivers over the last two seasons since transferring from USC. McCoy caught 52 passes for 677 yards and four touchdowns a season ago and entered the South Carolina game second on the team with 15 catches and 196 yards.

“Hate what happened to Bru,” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said following the game. “There’s nobody better than him. Great teammate, great leader, tough as they come. Works extremely hard to be his best and make sure his teammates do that too.  So I hate it for him.”

McCoy still has one remaining year of eligibility due to COVID-19 eligibility relief but he was not expected to use it and it is too soon to tell if the injury changes any of his plans.

With McCoy sidelined a number of Tennessee receivers will earn more opportunities including Kaleb Webb, Chas Nimrod and Dont’e Thornton.
