VFLs in NFL Week 3: Josh Dobbs Gets a Win, Josh Palmer Gets Opportunity

Week 3 of the NFL season has officially concluded.

Thirty former Vols are on rosters this NFL season, representing 20 different teams. Nineteen saw action in Week 3.

See how each VFL fared in this past weekend’s action below.

S Micah Abernathy – Atlanta Falcons

On the practice squad.

DE Derek Barnett – Philadelphia Eagles

Did not record a stat in Philadelphia’s 25-11 win over Tampa Bay, but he did play 23 percent of defensive snaps and 25 percent of special teams snaps.

DT Matthew Butler – Las Vegas Raiders

On the practice squad.

WR Marquez Callaway – Las Vegas Raiders

On the practice squad.

LS Morgan Cox – Tennessee Titans

Snapped for seven punts and one successful field goal in Tennessee’s 27-3 blowout loss to Cleveland.

QB Joshua Dobbs – Arizona Cardinals

Dobbs continued his big-time play and got his first win as an NFL starting quarterback on Sunday, as the Cardinals upset the Cowboys 28-16.

Dobbs completed 17 of 21 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 55 yards on six carries in the win.

TE/FB Princeton Fant – Dallas Cowboys

On the practice squad.

QB Hendon Hooker – Detroit Lions

Inactive as he remains on the NFI list still rehabbing his ACL injury.

WR Jalin Hyatt – New York Giants

Was not targeted in the Giants’ 30-12 loss to the 49ers. However, Hyatt played 32 percent of the offensive snaps.

S Theo Jackson – Minnesota Vikings

Jackson recorded one tackle in Minnesota’s 28-24 loss to the Chargers. Jackson played 5 percent of defensive snaps and 64 percent of special teams snaps.

WR Jauan Jennings – San Francisco 49ers

Caught two of three targets for 31 yards and played 37 percent of offensive snaps in San Francisco’s big win over the Giants on Thursday Night Football last week.

LB Alexander Johnson – Miami Dolphins

On the practice squad.

FB Jakob Johnson – Las Vegas Raiders

Played 10 percent of offensive snaps and 38 percent of special teams snaps. Logged one special teams tackle, his first of the season.

WR/PR Velus Jones Jr. – Chicago Bears

Did not log an offensive snap in Chicago’s 41-10 loss to Kansas City. Jones did play 52 percent of special teams snaps and recorded a special teams tackle.

RB Alvin Kamara – New Orleans Saints

Kamara served the final game of his three-game suspension on Sunday and will be back for New Orleans next week.

OL Cade Mays – Carolina Panthers

Played 17 percent of special teams snaps (six total) in the Panthers’ 37-20 loss to Seattle. Did not play an offensive snap.

CB Emmanuel Moseley – Detroit Lions

Was inactive in the Lions’ dominant win over Atlanta as he continues to work his way back from a torn ACL last season.

WR Joshua Palmer – Los Angeles Chargers

Had his best game of the season to date in the Chargers’ narrow win over the Vikings. Caught four of seven targets for 66 yards and his first touchdown of the 2023 season.

Unfortunately, the Chargers lost starting WR Mike Williams to a torn ACL in the game, and Williams is out for the season. In his absence, Palmer figures to see increased playing time and opportunity.

Palmer played 61 percent of offensive snaps.

RB Cordarrelle Patterson – Atlanta Falcons

Did not play in Atlanta’s 20-6 win over the Falcons as he continues to deal with a thigh injury, despite optimism he would play. Patterson should return to the field soon.

DE Kyle Phillips – New Orleans Saints

On the practice squad.

LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin – Detroit Lions

Totaled two tackles on special teams, where he played 85 percent of the snaps as the Lions’ ST captain. Reeves-Maybin logged his first defensive reps of the season, seeing four percent of the snaps.

OG Trey Smith – Kansas City Chiefs

Played 100 percent of offensive snaps at starting right guard and 28 percent of special teams snaps in the Chiefs’ 41-10 win over the Bears.

CB Cameron Sutton – Detroit Lions

Tallied three tackles and played 100 percent of defensive snaps in Detroit’s two-touchdown win over Atlanta.

CB Alontae Taylor – New Orleans Saints

Filled up the stat sheet once again as a starting cornerback for New Orleans. In the Saints’ one-point loss to Green Bay, Taylor recorded five solo tackles, two TFLs, one QB hit and five pass deflections. Taylor played 100 percent of defensive snaps and 16 percent of special teams snaps in the loss.

DE Darrell Taylor – Seattle Seahawks

Did not record a stat in Seattle’s 17-point win over Carolina and played 11 percent of defensive snaps and three percent of special teams snaps.

WR Cedric Tillman – Cleveland Browns

Played 15 percent of offensive snaps but did not targeted in Cleveland’s 27-3 win over Tennessee.

DL Shy Tuttle – Carolina Panthers

Recorded two tackles in Carolina’s loss to Seattle and played 52 percent of defensive snaps while also playing 20 percent of special teams snaps.

OT Darnell Wright – Chicago Bears

Played every offensive snap as the starting right tackle in Chicago’s loss to the Chiefs. Also played 8 percent of special teams snaps.

Wright played well up against elite pass rusher George Karlaftis, allowing zero sacks and only one pressure. Wright has only allowed four pressures this season.

DT Kendal Vickers – Buffalo Bills

On the practice squad.

DE Byron Young – Los Angeles Rams

Young’s hot start to his NFL career continued in the Rams’ 19-16 loss to the Bengals on Monday Night Football.

Young recored 0.5 sacks, five total tackles (four solo), three QB hits, and played 92 percent of defensive snaps as a starting defensive end for Los Angeles.

It was Young’s highest snap share on defense to date and first game playing no special teams snaps.
