VFLs in NFL Week 1: Josh Dobbs Makes First Season-Opening Start

Week 1 of the NFL season has officially concluded, and football is now all the way back.

Thirty former Vols are on rosters this NFL season, representing 20 different teams. Seventeen saw action in Week 1.

How each VFL fared in this past weekend’s action is below.

S Micah Abernathy – Atlanta Falcons

Did not see any action in Atlanta’s 24-10 win over Carolina as he was put on the practice squad prior to the start of the season.

DE Derek Barnett – Philadelphia Eagles

Logged two tackles and one TFL. Played 20 percent of defensive snaps and 16 percent of special teams snaps.

DT Matthew Butler – Las Vegas Raiders

Did not see any action in Vegas’ 17-16 over the Broncos after being signed to the practice squad prior to the start of the season.

WR Marquez Callaway – Las Vegas Raiders

Callaway did not see any action in the Raiders’ season-opening win as he was signed to the practice squad prior to the start of the season.

LS Morgan Cox – Tennessee Titans

Snapped for five field goals and three punts. All five field goal attempts were successful in the Titans’ 16-15 loss to the Saints.

QB Joshua Dobbs – Arizona Cardinals

In his third career start and first season-opening start, Dobbs completed 21 of 30 passes for 132 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. Dobbs did lose two of his three fumbles in the Cardinals’ 20-16 loss to Washington.

TE/FB Princeton Fant – Dallas Cowboys

Currently on the Cowboys’ practice squad and did not see action in Dallas’ 40-0 win over the Giants.

QB Hendon Hooker – Detroit Lions

Hooker was inactive in the Lions’ 21-20 season-opening win as he remains on the NFI list still rehabbing his ACL injury.

WR Jalin Hyatt – New York Giants

Did not catch a pass in first NFL game but did play 36 percent of offensive snaps. Hyatt dropped his only target.

S Theo Jackson – Minnesota Vikings

Saw his first action in an NFL game Sunday, playing one defensive snap and 20 special teams snaps (71%). The Vikings lost 20-17 to the Buccaneers.

WR Jauan Jennings – San Francisco 49ers

Failed to haul in his lone target but played 32 percent of offensive snaps and 19 percent of special teams snaps.

LB Alexander Johnson – Miami Dolphins

Currently on the Dolphins practice squad.

FB Jakob Johnson – Las Vegas Raiders

Played 46 percent of offensive snaps and 26 percent of special teams snaps in the Raiders’ 17-16 win over Denver.

WR/PR Velus Jones Jr. – Chicago Bears

Was inactive in Chicago’s 38-20 loss to Green bay.

RB Alvin Kamara – New Orleans Saints

Kamara will not play the first three games of the season as he serves a three-game suspension.

OL Cade Mays – Carolina Panthers

Played eight percent (2) special teams snaps in the Panthers’ loss. Did not play an offensive snap.

CB Emmanuel Moseley – Detroit Lions

Was inactive in the Lions’ narrow win over Kansas City.

WR Joshua Palmer – Los Angeles Chargers

Caught his only target for four yards. Played 62 percent of offensive snaps.

RB Cordarrelle Patterson – Atlanta Falcons

Did not play in Atlanta’s 24-10 win over the Panthers as he deals with a thigh injury.

DE Kyle Phillips – New Orleans Saints

Currently on the Saints practice squad.

LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin – Detroit Lions

Logged one tackle and played 89 percent of special teams snaps.

Also had one rush for three yards on the Lions’ successful fake punt attempt in the first half.

OG Trey Smith – Kansas City Chiefs

Played 100 percent of offensive snaps and 15 percent of special teams snaps in the Chiefs’ season-opening loss as the starting right guard.

CB Cameron Sutton – Detroit Lions

Played 100 percent of snaps as a starting cornerback for the Lions in their win over Kansas City but did not record a statistic.

CB Alontae Taylor – New Orleans Saints

Taylor impressed with five tackles and one PBU in the Saints’ win over the Titans. Taylor played 68 percent of defensive snaps and 43 percent of special teams snaps.

DE Darrell Taylor – Seattle Seahawks

Recorded one tackle in Seattle’s season-opening loss against the Rams. Played 46 percent of defensive snaps and 29 percent of special teams snaps.

WR Cedric Tillman – Cleveland Browns

Tillman was not targeted in the Browns’ blowout win over the Bengals but played 11 snaps.

DL Shy Tuttle – Carolina Panthers

Recorded three tackles, 0.5 sacks, one QB hit in Carolina’s loss. Played 63 percent of defensive snaps and 19 percent of special teams snaps.

OT Darnell Wright – Chicago Bears

Played 100 percent of offensive snaps and seven percent of special teams snaps as starting right tackle for the Bears.

DT Kendal Vickers – Buffalo Bills

Currently on the Bills’ practice squad.

DE Byron Young – Los Angeles Rams

Young had a great NFL debut. The VFL got the start at defensive end recorded four tackles and half a sack in the Rams’ win against the Seahawks.
