Scottie Scheffler Outright Winner (+137)
With another top-five finish at the BMW Championship last week — his 12th of the season — Scheffler was up to his old tricks once again. The former Masters Champion gained over 13 strokes ball-striking at Olympia Fields, which is the best that he’s hit the ball since the Memorial. Once again, his flat-stick prevented him from crossing the finish line. Fortunately for him, East Lake features some of the easiest and most straightforward greens on the PGA Tour, and it is a difficult golf course to chase on.
John Rahm First Round Leader (+1200)
There is tremendous value on Jon Rahm at 12/1. That is an implied win probability of just 7.69%. If you simulate this round 100 times, Rahm ends up as the leader eight or more times — not too shabby. Rahm is not in his best form, but when his game is on, he is every bit as good as Scheffler. This is a guy who hoisted four trophies — the fourth being a green jacket — over a nine-tournament stretch earlier this season, and he seems to always step up when the pressure is higher.
Viktor Hovland First Round Leader (+333)
If Rahm seems like too much of a long shot for you, consider Viktor Hovland. Hovland has to make up a two-stroke lead to win, but that kind of deficit is not something that will deter a player of his caliber. He is coming off a week in which he gained over nine strokes ball striking and has better-than-advertised course history at East Lake, having shot a 65 here in each of his last two appearances. Obviously, the sportsbooks have caught onto Hovland at this point, and the number is not huge. But it feels better backing him than McIlroy, who is an extra shot back, has two elite golfers to go through and is not playing as well.
