College football season is almost back and with it is The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman’s list of the 101 top freaks in college football entering the season.
With recommendations from coaches, players, schools, scouts and agents, Feldman searches for the 101 biggest freaks in college football with insane athletic ability. Here’s how he explains it.
“The original idea was to spotlight the players whose athleticism blew the minds of folks inside their own college football programs,” Feldman wrote.
So, did any Vols land on the list of the 101 biggest freaks in college football entering the 2023 season?
Tennessee sophomore receiver Squirrel White is the only Vol on the list landing at No. 64. Running back Jaylen Wright and offensive tackle Darnell Wright landed on the list a season ago.
At just 5-foot-10, 165-pounds White is one of the fastest receivers in college football and can take the top off the defense.

“Love the name. Love the wheels,” Feldman wrote. “The 5-10, 165-pound sophomore, one of the fastest wide receivers in college football, is being counted on to fill former Vol blazer Jalin Hyatt’s role of lethal slot man. White has been clocked at 23.4 miles per hour velocity on the Catapult system and also has vertical-jumped 40.6 inches.”
White was just a three-star recruit coming out of Pinson, Alabama but his talent and high ceiling was obvious immediately once he arrived on campus. The slot receiver caught 30 passes for 481 yards and two touchdowns in his freshman season.
With Hyatt sidelined in the Orange Bowl, White turned in a nine catch, 108 yard and one touchdown against Clemson.
White isn’t the only receiver that will help replace Hyatt’s production from the slot. Oregon transfer Dont’e Thornton has been working in the slot and out wide since transferring to Tennessee earlier in the offseason.
Both White and Thornton have big play ability that will keep defenses honest.

Y’all forgetting Keaton. He’s the one, he will make the catch he made great one hand before going out of bounds. Go to man when you need it.
