How VFLs Performed in Week 1 of NFL Preseason

Week one of the three-week NFL preseason has officially concluded. Of the 32 former Vols that are currently on an NFL roster, 21 saw the field over the past week, and four made their NFL debuts.

Stat lines for all VFLs in the first week of the NFL preseason are below.

S Micah Abernathy – Atlanta Falcons

Recorded two tackles in Atlanta’s 19-3 win over the Dolphins.

DE Derek Barnett – Philadelphia Eagles

Did not record a stat but saw action in Philadelphia’s 20-19 loss to the Ravens.

DT Matthew Butler – Las Vegas Raiders

Recorded one tackle in Vegas’ 34-7 blowout victory over the Niners.

DE LaTrell Bumphus – Seattle Seahawks

Did not see any action in Seattle’s win over the Vikings.

WR Marquez Callaway – Denver Broncos

Caught one pass for seven yards in Denver’s 18-17 loss to the Cardinals.

OG Jerome Carvin – Kansas City Chiefs

Saw action at guard in Kansas City’s preseason opener as he continues to compete for a roster spot.

LS Morgan Cox – Tennessee Titans

Snapped for two field goal attempts (one successful) and two extra point attempts (both successful) and four punts.

QB Joshua Dobbs – Cleveland Browns

Completed eight of 16 passes for 77 yards and one interception in the Browns’ 17-15 loss to Washington. Dobbs did not play in Cleveland’s preseason opener in the Hall of Fame Game against the Jets.

TE Princeton Fant – Dallas Cowboys

Did not record a stat in the Cowboys’ 28-23 preseason loss to the Jaguars.

OLB Byron Young – Los Angeles Rams

Logged one tackle in his NFL preseason debut for the Rams, who lost to the Chargers, 34-17.

QB Hendon Hooker – Detroit Lions

Did not play in Detroit’s 21-16 loss to the Giants as he continues to rehab his knee.

WR Jalin Hyatt – New York Giants

Caught one pass for minus four yards in New York’s 21-16 loss to Detroit.

S Theo Jackson – Minnesota Vikings

Co-led Minnesota in total tackles with six and led the team with five solo tackles in the Vikings’ 24-13 loss to Seattle. Jackson has had a solid training camp thus far.

WR Jauan Jennings – San Francisco 49ers

Did not play in the 49ers’ preseason opener at the Raiders.

FB Jakob Johnson – Las Vegas Raiders

Johnson was inactive for the Raiders’ preseason opener vs. the 49ers.

WR/PR Velus Jones Jr. – Chicago Bears

Caught one pass for six yards on his only target. Returned two punts for a total of seven yards and also lost a fumble by muffing a punt return.

RB Alvin Kamara – New Orleans Saints

Logged three carries for 14 yards and two receptions for 21 yards in the Saints’ 26-24 win over the Chiefs.

RB John Kelly Jr. – Cleveland Browns

Logged six carries for just six yards and caught one pass for three yards in the Browns’ loss to Washington. However, in the Hall of Fame Game, Kelly ran the ball 10 times for 42 yards and caught four passes for 27 yards and a touchdown.

OG Cade Mays – Carolina Panthers

Played a high percentage of the snaps in Carolina’s 27-0 loss to the Jets. Mays moved all around the offensive line, starting at right guard before seeing time at center and right tackle as he continues to compete for a roster spot.

CB Emmanuel Moseley – Detroit Lions

Was inactive in Detroit’s win over the Giants as he continues to rehab a torn ACL from last season.

WR Joshua Palmer – Los Angeles Chargers

Did not play in Los Angeles’ 34-17 win over the Rams after getting injured in practice a couple of days ago.

RB Cordarrelle Patterson – Atlanta Falcons

Did not play in the Falcons’ preseason opener due to a soft-tissue injury. Nothing serious.

ILB Jalen Reeves-Maybin – Detroit Lions

Co-led the team in tackles with four, two solo, and recorded one tackle for loss.

OG Trey Smith – Kansas City Chiefs

Started at right guard in the preseason-opening loss to the Saints.

CB Cameron Sutton – Detroit Lions

Did not play in Detroit’s preseason opener vs. the Giants.

CB Alontae Taylor – New Orleans Saints

Recorded two tackles and a pass deflection in the Saints’ two-point win over the Chiefs.

OLB Darrell Taylor – Seattle Seahawks

Was inactive in the Seahawks’ preseason opener.

WR Cedric Tillman – Cleveland Browns

Caught two passes for seven yards in the Browns’ 17-15 loss to Washington. In Cleveland’s preseason opener agains the New York Jets in the Hall of Fame Game, Tillman recorded two catches for 35 yards.

CB Bryce Thompson – Miami Dolphins

Recorded two tackles, one solo, in Miami’s 19-3 loss to Atlanta.

DT Shy Tuttle – Carolina Panthers

Saw action in the Panthers loss to the Jets but did not record a statistic.

DT Kendal Vickers – Buffalo Bills

Recorded two tackles and one QB hit in Buffalo’s 23-19 win over the Colts.

OT Darnell Wright – Chicago Bears

Did not allow a sack in his NFL preseason debut starting at RT in Chicago’s 23-17 win over Tennessee. Various highlights on Twitter show that Wright had an above-average debut.
