Tennessee has a handful of freshmen who could earn real roles and become impact players in their inaugural collegiate season. But freshman tight end Ethan Davis has a clear path to the field and could be Tennessee’s best pass catching tight end this season.

247sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivens thinks Davis can be even more than just a contributor as a freshman. Ivens listed the Vols’ tight end as one of 14 potential impact freshmen in the Southeastern Conference this season.

Davis, a former four-star recruit from Atlanta, was impressive in his first spring at Tennessee and was one of the standouts in the Orange-and-White game.

After Tennessee’s first scrimmage of fall camp, Vols head coach Josh Heupel expressed his belief that both Davis and UC-Davis transfer McCallan Castles would both earn real playing time this season.

“At this point, really believe that both of them will play at really high level when they’re out there on the field,” Heupel said of the duo. “McCallan and really both of them are so much further ahead than they were when they finished spring ball. Both of them are seasoned in what we’re doing offensively. McCallan has been really good out on the perimeter, Ethan Davis is too. It’s really natural for both guys to be playmakers out in space.”

While there’s an opportunity for both Davis and Castles to play this season, super senior Jacob Warren will be Tennessee’s starting tight end this season. Warren split starting time at tight end with Princeton Fant over the last two seasons, combining for 30 receptions, 342 yards and three touchdowns.

On the 247sports Football Recruiting Podcast, Andrew Ivins and Cooper Petagna listed both Davis and linebacker Arion Carter as potential impact SEC freshman from Tennessee.
