Tennessee’s newest commit on Wednesday night, five-star wide receiver Mike Matthews, is one of the top prospects and top pass catchers in the nation.
The Lilburn, GA native is ranked as the No. 13 overall player in the nation, the No. 4 wide receiver in the class, and the No. 3 player from the state of Georgia according to 247 Composite.
Standing at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Matthews uses a combination of speed, strength, and football IQ to make for one of the most versatile and sought-after receivers in the class. Tennessee beat out Clemson, Georgia, and Southern California for the elite prospect.
“A talented two-way athlete that some colleges view as a wide receiver long-term while others think he’s a future all-conference safety,” 247 Director of Scouting Andrew Ivens wrote about Matthews in February. “Followed breakout sophomore season up with a monster junior campaign on offense as he averaged 21.5 yards per catch, totaling 1,030 yards and nine touchdowns through the air in the Peach State’s highest-classification.”
