MLB All-Star Game Betting Odds and Preview
The American League has won the last nine games between the two leagues. The NL will try to erase the streak tonight, but it’ll have to do it with 10 pitchers making their first All-Star game. The impact of the newcomers may be especially critical depending on the start of the game. Zac Gallen and Gerrit Cole are getting the starts for the NL and AL, respectively. The matchup goes in favor of Cole in this one, which doesn’t help the NL’s odds of breaking the streak.
In Gallen’s last seven starts (45.2 innings), he has surrendered 18 runs. Additionally, his strikeouts have dropped month after month as the season has progressed. Up against a lineup as hot as the AL starters could mean bad news for the Cy Young hopeful and the NL. All-Star games have been tightly contested, so any slip-ups early could create too big of a hole to come back from.
Meanwhile, Cole has been much more consistent, giving up 13 runs through a similar number of innings (43) while facing tougher lineups and racking up strikeouts. Last but least, Cole only surrendered one run to the Dodgers the last time he faced their lineup, and the perennial contenders have three starters in the All-Star Game lineup this year. That bodes well for a good start for the AL.
As the game progresses, the young first-time, All-Star pitchers will have their hands full if the game is close. The last six games were within two runs, and two of the games went to extra innings. That’s a lot of pressure on young arms down the stretch for the NL against some of the best bats the league has to offer.
Consider the wagers below for tonight’s game.
American League to Score the First Run (+115)
The NL’s lineup has more firepower on paper, which is likely why it is favored to strike first, especially since the NL gets to bat first. However, the NL will be up against Cole, who should be able to keep them at bay at least through the first inning. Additionally, this is Gallen’s first All-Star appearance, and he is starting. Nerves could get the better of him knowing he must pitch a shutout while, and one mistake against an All-Star lineup might be all it takes for the AL to cover this wager.
American League Moneyline (-110)
Against the caliber of bats in this contest, pitching is especially important. Although the NL has plenty of great arms and talent, it has to create playing time for a plethora of young arms. In a big game environment like this, that could make the NL vulnerable for extended periods of time. With bragging rights and nearly a $1 million prize pool on the line, experience is a factor, which is why we like the AL to continue the streak.
