2023 MLB Home Run Derby Preview and Best Bets
Last year’s champion Juan Soto isn’t participating tonight, so a new champion is guaranteed. Below are the odds to win the title at various sportsbooks.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been having a down year in the power category. His batting stats are above average across the board with the exception of a couple, including his home run total, which sits at 13. He compiled 48 home runs in 2021, and 32 in 2022, and is on track to have less again. His ISO (extra bases per at-bat) for the year sits at .175, which is pretty alarming for a power hitter. Considering his season so far, he may not be a good option despite having the second-best odds.
Nestled near the bottom of the odds list is Mookie Betts at +1000. At those odds, he offers the most value of all hitters in the contest. He is currently tied for third in home runs this season with 26, and he leads all hitters in the Home Run Derby with a .315 ISO percentage. Luis Robert Jr. and Pete Alonso are right below him with percentages of 0.298 and 0.286, respectively.
In his last 15 games, he is batting .365 and has accumulated eight home runs and 18 RBIs. There aren’t many hitters, if any at all, hotter than Betts at the plate right now.
Julio Rodriguez is a wild card. As a rookie, he placed second and stole the show by racking up 81 home runs — the second-most ever hit in the contest. His batting stats are down in his sophomore season, but even with better stats last year, he wasn’t expected to perform the way he did. His endurance in the contest last year is his biggest advantage in this year’s derby.

His power didn’t seem to wane too much as the derby progressed, and that will surely serve him well as the youngest person in the contest.
Here are a couple of the best available bets on Caesars.
Mookie Betts to top Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 1st Round (+192)
Batting stats only mean so much in this competition, but they do offer some valuable insight. Guerrero Jr. and Betts are currently on two completely different batting trajectories. The easy tosses should help Guerrero Jr. look more like the slugger he is known to be but given his struggle with going yard in 2023 and reports of a knee injury this season, Betts topping the slugger with +192 odds provides great value here.
Pete Alonso, Adolis Garcia, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Adley Rutschman Each Win Home Run Derby 1st Round Matchup (+1000)
This suggestion is based on pure value. Caesars lists this wager at +1000 and all of the picks are the favorites in their matchups with the exception of Adley Rutschman, who is facing off against Luis Robert Jr. in the first round. Robert Jr. is having a career year across the board now that he is getting an influx of plate appearances and has a significant advantage in all the power categories.
However, both batters are making their Home Run derby debuts, and Rodriguez proved last year that anything can happen. With all the pressure on Robert Jr. to get out of the first round in his debut, the pressure could be just enough to rattle him and allow Rutschman to steal the round. It wouldn’t take a major bet to capitalize off of this option.
