North Carolina State catcher transfer Cannon Peebles announced his commitment to Tennessee baseball Tuesday night.

Peebles is a massive get for Tennessee baseball at a position of need and chose the Vols over a top group which included Vanderbilt and Virginia. The Ashland, Virginia native earned Freshman All-American honors for his impressive 2023 season at North Carolina State.

The switch hitter raked for the Wolfpack, hitting .352 with 12 home runs, 11 doubles and 50 RBIs. Peebles led North Carolina State in batting average and runs batted in during his freshman campaign.

Peebles provides added security to the catcher spot and has two years of college ball remaining before he’ll be eligible for the MLB Draft.

Catcher has been a question mark for Tennessee the last two seasons after Connor Pavolony departed Knoxville for professional baseball. The Vols have landed transfer catcher commits each of the last two summers but neither Matthew McCormick nor Jack Alexander ended up playing a season at Tennessee.

Evan Russell moved from left field to catcher in 2022 and Cal Stark won the catcher’s job this season. Stark struggled at the plate, hitting just .180 with five home runs but was strong for Tennessee defensively— particularly down the home stretch of the season.

Peebles commitment to Tennessee baseball comes on the same day that star pitcher Chase Burns entered the transfer portal. In an offseason which the transfer portal will be extremely important for Tennessee, it took away and gave.

The former North Carolina State catcher becomes Tennessee’s second commitment out of the transfer portal and will be far from its last. Stay up to date with all Tennessee baseball transfer portal news with the RTI transfer portal tracker here.
